چکیده

succinate, while ?Ig+, AMP, and DPN+ were required for the oxidation of citrate. 2. Pyruvate-2-C14 and acetate-2-C14 were metabolized by the mitochondria. 3. The absorption of water by the endosperm tissue was accompanied by the activation of the Krebs cycle enzyme system. 4. The capacity of mitochondrial particles to oxidize succinate decreased as the embryos germinated; their ability to oxidize citrate and a-ketoglutarate increased. 5. The possible physiological significance of changes in particulate enzyme activity, as related to water uptake by the germinating seed, is discussed.

Persistence of benomyl and captan and their effects on microbial activity in field soils.

Fusarium root rot, caused by Fusarium oxysporum schl. f. sp. pini (Hartig) Snyder & Hansen, causes severe losses to some species of conifers even though beds are fumigated with methyl bromide-chloropicrin (3:2) the autumn before spring seeding. Benomyl (methyl-l-(butylcarbamoyl)-2-benzimidazole carbamate) at ll.2 kg a.i./ha or captan (N-trichloromethylthio-4cyclohexene-l,2-dicaboximide) at 7.3 ...

Group selection management in conifer forests: relationships between opening size and tree growth

Replicated circular openings ranging in size from 0.1 to 1 ha were cleared in 1996 at Blodgett Forest Research Station, California, and planted with seedlings of six native species. After 5 years of postharvest growth, heights were measured and analyzed according to species, opening size, and location within opening. The sequence of mean height from tallest to shortest, according to species, wa...

NOT E Efficacy of Fipronil for Protecting Individual Pines from Mortality Attributed to Attack by Western Pine Beetle and Mountain Pine Beetle (Coleoptera: Curculionidae, Scolytinae)'

Bark beetles (Coleoptera: C~rculionidae, Scolytinae) are commonly recognized as important tree mortality agents in coniferous forests of the western U.S. Most species feed on the phloem and cambium, or xylem tissue of woody plants; and a few are recognized as the most destructive of all forest insect pests. The last decade has seen elevated levels of bark beetle caused tree mortality in spruce,...

The effect of different pine hosts on the sampling of Rhizopogon spore banks in five Eastern Sierra Nevada forests.

Our primary goal was to determine whether detection of Rhizopogon internal transcribed spacer (ITS) groups is affected by the pine species used in seedling bioassays. Our secondary goal was to investigate composition of Rhizopogon spore banks in the Eastern Sierra Nevada of California, a previously unsampled region. We used seedlings of Pinus contorta, Pinus jeffreyi, Pinus lambertiana, and Pin...
